What Lies Beneath

I want to make a thing of beauty
But instead I roll a dead log over
Or lift a big flat rock
To see the bustling community that lies beneath
Proverbial for that which should remain hidden
That which is too horrid for eye to tolerate

But I like
Those meticulous energetic crafters
The beetles ants spiders earwigs
Annelid worms and mollusks and nematodes
Roly-polies those terrestrial crustaceans
Egg larva and adult
Greater fungi and lesser fungi
Spores puffs powders and mycelia
The spun white cloth that disintegrates when touched
The xylophagous myriads
The salutary decay and soil aborning
