Conflagration

I saw the wide St. Johns all in flame
The region engulfed in the smoke
Of a second asteroid
The catastrophe visible
Only to those in the heart of it

The grate at the height of the Mathews Bridge
Red hot to melt a tire
The cars packed in the lot beside the port
Only enough gas to go a few hundred yards
Exploding one by one

The stubborn skyscrapers bowed
Before the immensity
The lush oaks on the south bank
Communicated the fast fire down the state
And the fragrant salt marsh boiled away

You could not see retribution
Except in the banal sense
That foolishness has consequences
That humans having evolved for greed and mendacity
Will seize every opportunity for enterprise
